This rustic bench inside La Purisma Mission in Lompoc, California provides the perfect spot for quiet reflection. The thick adobe walls of this Spanish-style mission keep the restful interior cool on the hottest day.
This mission is actually a reconstruction, not the original Spanish mission. The original Franciscan mission, Misión la PurÃsima Concepción de MarÃa SantÃsima, founded in 1787, was destroyed by an earthquake in 1812. It was rebuilt elsewhere, but the rebuilt mission was turned over to the Mexican government in 1834 and fell into disrepair. During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps restored nine current mission buildings, several other structures, and the original water system. The reconstructed mission's dedication occurred on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7, 1941. So, the current mission is historical in more ways than one!
