Description

Aldeyjarfoss Waterfall in northern Iceland is a little off the beaten track, particularly in winter. You likely can’t drive there in your own vehicle but need to enlist the services of companies that have ‘super jeeps’ with gigantic tires that can take you through snow, ice, and slush. Along the way, they make a stop to deflate the tires of the vehicle for better traction. Still, in the slush along the route we nearly got stuck a few times but after nearly an hour, we arrived at a parking area. It was very windy, cold, and dark. We put on crampons, shouldered our gear, and slid down the hill to the cliff overlooking the falls. For someone not used to wintry weather, it was a challenge to set up the tripod, get the camera on the tripod, get the filter system and remote shutter release on the camera, all without losing my gloves or having anything else blow away or slide away down the incline. Once accomplished, there was a tendency to stay put and just do photos from one spot! However, I eventually mustered up the fortitude to get myself and all equipment to a few other locations along the cliff edge. The 20-meter high waterfall seems mightier than its height would suggest. It is a powerful stream of glacial water forcing its way from the Icelandic Highland between basalt columnar cliffs. The Skjalfandafljot river and waterfall are carrying tons of soil and dirt from under the glacier Vatnajokull ice cap to the northern shore where the river meets the open sea. In the delicate early morning light on a clear day, it was absolutely stunning.
