Description
This digital photograph features a statue by Walker Hancock of the individual considered the founder of the American naval tradition, Admiral John Paul Jones. This wonderful statue is situated on the grounds of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Pennsylvania. It was installed there in 1957. Admiral Jones was born in Scotland, went to sea at twelve years old, and after a series of events, came to Philadelphia in 1775. Jones eventually got a commission in the Continental Navy and became a daring hero in raids on the British. At one point following this, he even served as a Russian rear admiral fighting the Turks at the request of Catherine the Great. His remains are now enshrined in a crypt at the U.S Naval Academy in Annapolis.
