Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
This is a reproduction to Antonio Raffaelel Calliano’s masterpiece “Achilles in his chariot rides over the body of the slain Hector” of 1813. The artist was born in Muzzano in 1785 and studied in Turin. His brother Giovanni Battista was also a painter and he was awarded a stipend to study art in Rome in 1804. In 1813 Joachim Murat in Naples commissioned this painting for the throne room in Caserta. He followed his brother to Madrid after the Bourbon Restoration. He died there after 1824. The painting depicts a dramatic moment in the Iliad when Achilles rides his chariot over the Trojan prince who he has just killed in revenge for the death of his lover Patroclus at the hands of Hector. The oil on canvas painting measures 29.5 by 53.4 inches and is in private hands.
