Watercolor batik on ginwashi rice paper of trees in sun and shadow, by Conni Schaftenaar.
A watercolor batik done from a reference photo taken in Duluth MN by my watercolor instructor. The sunlight on the trees, the space beyond the trees, the hostas and impatiens flowers all provided contrasts and bright spots to create interest. Our class worked on our own versions of her image. She told us that in the bright space through the trees is a bluff that overlooks Lake Superior! Maybe this fall when we do water and waves we'll do that view!
Ginwashi rice paper is such fun to work with, but applying wax to maintain light areas is a real challenge! Drawing was done with Micron Ink before applying wax.
