Description
Dear Peter,
I know it's been years since I've been on Tarlis and I haven't told you yet why I left. You've been bugging me about it off and on now for ages. It's time I let you know what happened. Actually I really didn't have a choice. They all blamed me and why not I was Project Coordinator. I couldn't help it those really in charge left us drifting without a life boat. It was the Titanic all over again with the difference being it was the company that sunk us.
The night it started Jeremy had brought to my attention that the recent batch of samples seemed to be growing a lot faster than was anticipated. It wasn't much of a difference but Jeremy thought the growth was accelerating. We were using that new medium the company sent us. I told him to keep me informed and then promptly forgot about it.
Forgetting about it was the worst I could have done because by morning we had a real growing problem. My first clue was the security alarm system blaring me awake before the sun even came up and the second was Jeremy screaming at me that the lab had been overgrown with the new sample.
Now mind you I thought I was dreaming. That danged alarm and Jeremy, who was normally a very calm and collected guy blathering wildly about tentacles of growth and how the buds broke off and formed new cells all within minutes. I simply laughed in his face. It was the wrong thing to do.
The next twenty-four hours was chaotic. The plants were over taking the facility and we barely made it out alive after sending a Mayday to the company.
It was almost five months before they reached us at Tarlis. I realize the Farcedia Galaxy is off the beaten path but you would have thought they could have rushed a bit considering how untenable the situation was. Thankfully we all made it. Perhaps they hoped we wouldn't. It wasn't easy. We had to close off the main compound and all but one outpost. It wasn't a walk in the park.
Being the Project Coordinator the buck landed on me. I was given a choice to resign or get fired. I resigned of course and the project shut down temporarily until a new team could be found. Records of the event were expunged by the company and my team was scattered across the galaxies. I headed to Earth. I didn't look back.
Oh I have fond memories of Tarlis, some I've shared with you already. Would I go back? No, not if it meant working for the company. It's not worth it.
So there you have it. So now you know.
take care,
Cassie
