420-class dinghies racing against each other in the RYA Youth National Championships held at Largs Sailing Club on the Scottish west coast this week.In the background is the monument known locally simply as "The Pencil". It commemorates the Battle of Largs in 1263 when King Hakkons invasion fleet of Viking long boats was trounced and repelled by the locals. Legend goes that he was foiled when the Scots were alerted by the screams of an unfortunate Viking who stepped on a thistle-nasty!
