Description
This is a reproduction of “The Discovery of Honey by Bacchus” by Piero di Cosimo of about 1499. This Italian artist was aged about thirty-seven when he created this masterpiece having been born in Florence. He had trained under Cosimo Rosselli whose daughter he married. He was influenced by Dutch painting known for his depiction of strange animals and fantastic scenes. It was commissioned by Giovanni Vespucci of Florence. Cosimo died in 1522 of the plague. The original is an oil on panel and measures 80 by 128.5 centimeters. It is in the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University.
