Description
1952 Chevy Truck and the Old Covered Bridge Artistic 1. Acrylic Painting of covered bridge, combined with digitally painted and imported blue truck. Topaz layers added. Mixed Media.
Chevrolet's Advance-Design was a light and medium duty truck series by Chevrolet, their first major redesign after WWII. It was billed as a larger, stronger, and sleeker design in comparison to the earlier AK Series. First available on Saturday June 28, 1947, these trucks were sold with various minor changes over the years until March 25, 1955, when the Task Force Series trucks replaced the Advance-Design model.
The same basic design family was used for all of its trucks including the Suburban, panel trucks, canopy express and cab overs. The cab overs used the same basic cab configuration and similar grille but used a shorter and taller hood and different fenders. The unique Cab Over fenders and hood required a custom cowl area which makes the Cab Over Engine cabs and normal truck cabs incompatible with one another while all truck cabs of all weights interchange.
From 1947 until 1955, Chevrolet trucks were number one in sales in the United States, with rebranded versions sold at GMC locations. 1952 - Outer door handles are now push button type as opposed to the previous turn down style. Speedometer now reads to 90 mph and dashboard trim is painted instead of chrome. Mid-year, Chevrolet stops using the 3100-6400 designation on the hood and changes to maroon window and wiper knobs.
While General Motors used this front end sheet metal, and to a slightly lesser extent the cab, on all of its trucks except for the Cab Overs, there are three main sizes of this truck: the half-, three-quarter-, and full ton capacities in short and long wheelbase.
Covered bridges evoke a special feeling about life in America. They make a person think about horses and buggies, gold rushes, barn raising and bygone eras when young lovers went “courting.”
They make people think of "The Bridges of Madison County." Frankly, who hasn’t fantasized about stepping into the shoes of Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood and recreating their meet-cute on a picturesque, covered bridge somewhere?
A covered bridge is a timber-truss bridge with a roof, decking, and siding, which in most covered bridges create an almost complete enclosure. The purpose of the covering is to protect the wooden structural members from the weather.
According to Covered Bridges Today by Brenda Krekler, as many as 12,000 covered bridges once existed in the United States; that number dropped to under 1,500 by the 1950s.The National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges was formed in 1950.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) encourages the preservation of covered bridges with its Covered Bridge Manual By 2018, less than one thousand still survived in the US.
Thanks to Jan Dappen for her online class and inspiration for the old bridge portion of this art work painting.
