Description
Packard was founded in 1899 by James and William Packard and their partner, George Weiss. Like many start up entrepreneurs of that time, the founders were working to motorize the horse carriage and did so in 1900, a simple, single cylinder engine. The vehicle was a success and Packard was on their way to being an iconic American car brands. Early Packard’s were built in Ohio but the company later moved to Detroit where they remained for many years. In the early 1950’s, Packard was purchased by Studebaker Corporation and the manufacturing was moved to Studebaker’s facility in South Bend, Ohio. Studebaker built its last Packard in 1958; the last Studebaker was built in 1966. Two pioneering brands that could not compete with the larger Big 3 automakers were now history.
