Storm Clouds Over The Sonoran Desert In Spring

Description
I shot Storm Clouds over the Sonoran Desert in Spring in early April as the parched desert was getting ready to absorb two-days of rain. I am standing in the Supersttiion Wilderness along a branch of Jacobs Crosscut trail looking north toward Four Peaks in the distance.
The Sonoran desert is often referred to as a tropical desert. With rainfall averaging from 3 to 16 inches per year across two distinct rainy seasons, the summer monsoons and the sustained winter rains, the Sonoran desert is lush with both plant and animal life. Spring storms do occur but they are far rarer than the seasonal rains. In this image one can see a virga. the meteorological name for visible precipitation that evaporates before hitting the ground prior to two-days of intermittent rain in April.
I converted the fun color image to black and white in order to experience the mysterious nature of the impending storm. As photographs alter time and space, first by freezing a moment that will never again be and then by compressing 4-dimensional space into two dimensions, the photographic image is naturally mysterious. Adding to the mystery is the unnatural confinement of space into a framed image that exists only within the four corners of the frame. Black and white adds to the mysterious nature of the photograph by removing all color references creating a range of monotones from nearly pure white to pure black. The nature of the black and white image is such that it leaves no room for 'reality' substituting the 'real' color image with the surreal black and white image. There is, then, no doubt as to whether the photograph is an image of a 'real' place or is a re-presentation of such a space that exists only in the mind of the photographer/artist.
