Description
The steppe eagle (Aquila Nipalensis) was once considered to be closely related to the non-migratory Tawny Eagle and the two forms have previously been treated as conspecific. It is larger than Tawny Eagle A. rapax and separated by width and length of gape.
Adult birds are brown in colour. The undersides of the wings are either the same colour as the wing coverts and belly or darker, with visible barring. There is a white patch on the upper tail coverts. The nape has either a rusty-coloured or ochre patch, which differs considerably in size across birds. In juveniles and immature birds the underside of the wing has a narrow white band, formed by the large lower wing coverts, which serves well to distinguish Steppe Eagles of this age from other eagle species.
