Description
This is a painting reproduction of “Male Model before George Reynolds”, a photograph of about 1889 by Thomas Eakins. He was about foty-five-nine years old when he created this painting. By the time he was twelve he exhibited precision in line drawing which he learned by watching his father, a writing master and callligraphy teacher. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts from age seventeen and five years later went to study in Paris under Gerome. Returning to America in 1871, he began his artistic career. In 1876 he became a teacher at the Philadelphia Academy but was forced to resign ten years later due to his his advocacy of realism and feminine equality, including the inclusion of nudity. His resignation was the subject of great controversy and led to a split in the Philadelphia Art Movement. He taught for another twelve years and was the focus of a devoted body of students. He died in 1916, one of the foremost of American Artists. This painting is an oil on canvas and measures 16 by 20 inches. It is in the possession of the artist.
