Description
Lees Ferry Historic Building - Glen Canyon National Recreation Area
Lees Ferry derives its name from John D. Lee, a Mormon pioneer, who settled in the area, one to hide from the law after the Mountain Meadow Massacre, but also to establish a ferry crossing on the Colorado River, for Mormon settlers moving into Arizona. While Lee and later his wife, only operated the ferry for a few years, the Mormon Church eventually took over operations, and continued the ferry service until 1928, when the first Navajo Bridge was installed downstream across Marble Canyon.
